Jack Wrangler
Career
Born John Robert Stillman to a film-producer father, Wrangler trained in theatre at Northwestern University before debuting in gay hardcore film in 1970 and becoming its first openly gay crossover star. In 1978 he began filming heterosexual features as well, appearing in both without concealing either. He retired from performing in the 1980s and moved into writing and directing, and in 1994 married the jazz and pop singer Margaret Whiting, remaining with her until his death in 2009. A 2008 documentary, Wrangler: Anatomy of an Icon, covered his career.
Signature: The era’s clearest bridge between its gay and heterosexual production wings, filming both without pretence, and its most unlikely mainstream postscript: a fifteen-year marriage to a Broadway-era jazz singer.
