Johnnie Keyes

Career

Keyes played "African Stud" opposite Marilyn Chambers in Behind the Green Door in 1972, one of the first hardcore films to cross into mainstream cultural conversation and, by most accounts, the first to put a Black male lead opposite a white actress in that context. He worked steadily from there into the 2010s, trained at Juilliard, boxed, sang and worked as a sex surrogate alongside performing. The AVN Hall of Fame inducted him in 2004; his own Wikipedia biography also credits him with XRCO Hall of Fame membership, without a stated year, and induction into Urban X's inaugural Hall of Fame class. He appeared in the documentaries After Porn Ends 2 (2017) and X-Rated: The Greatest Adult Movies of All Time, and died in Seattle in June 2018.

Signature: The performer every history of this category has to start with: cast opposite the era's biggest female star in the film that made hardcore briefly mainstream, more than a decade before the AVN Awards existed to recognise anyone in this category at all.
