Pornstar Ranked

Bollywood Porn Stars: What Is Documented, and What Is Manufactured

Six people, and two groups that are not the same thing. Three are adult performers who have worked in Indian mainstream production. Three are Indian screen figures whose names come up under this term and who have never made a pornographic film.

The table below says which is which; the rest of the page explains where everything else under this search term comes from.

The short answer

Three adult performers have documented work in Indian mainstream production: Sunny Leone, Mia Malkova and Johnny Sins. Three further names attach to this term — Sherlyn Chopra, Poonam Pandey and Sapna Sappu — and all three are Indian screen figures with no pornographic film credit in any published filmography. No Hindi film actress has ever worked in pornography, and there is no legal Indian adult industry for one to work in. The table below sets out all six and which group each belongs to.

Presented, not ranked

The six people: three adult performers, three Indian screen figures

Sunny Leone, Mia Malkova and Johnny Sins are adult performers, and each has documented work in an Indian mainstream production: twelve Hindi film releases, two films for one Indian director, one national television commercial. That is the whole of it — not a top three cut from a longer field, but every person who has both a documented adult-industry record and documented work in an Indian production.

Sherlyn Chopra, Poonam Pandey and Sapna Sappu are the other three, and none of them is an adult-film performer. Not one has a pornographic film credit in any published filmography. Two have published nude or sexual material about themselves — a magazine cover, a subscription platform, an application of her own — while working as actresses in Hindi and Telugu cinema and on Indian television. The third spent more than twenty years as a lead in the Hindi B-circuit, which is censor-certified theatrical cinema and which is what this term is most often actually describing.

Publishing sexual material about yourself is not working in the pornographic film industry, and neither is appearing in a certified feature that a distributor sold as racy. Indian list-writers collapse all three into one word. The law does not, the film certification board does not, and this page does not. Nobody here is ranked: the three crossings are differences in kind rather than degree, and the second three have no adult-film career to measure.

The two groups in this table are not the same thing. Sunny Leone, Mia Malkova and Johnny Sins are adult performers with documented Indian work. Sherlyn Chopra, Poonam Pandey and Sapna Sappu are film actresses and a media personality: none of them is an adult performer, none has a pornographic film credit in any published filmography, and describing any of them as a pornographic actress is factually wrong. The profession column states what each of the six actually does.

Why Sunny is included

Leone is the only person who has made this crossing in full, and the mechanics of how she made it are unusually well documented.

Born Karenjit Kaur Vohra in Sarnia, Ontario to Punjabi Sikh parents, she was Penthouse Pet of the Month in March 2001, Pet of the Year in 2003, a Vivid contract performer, and from 2009 the co-founder of her own production company.

Then, in 2011, she entered Bigg Boss on day 49 and Mahesh Bhatt walked into the house and offered her the lead in Jism 2.

Twelve Hindi releases followed between 2012 and 2017, along with Malayalam and Tamil appearances, an MTV hosting run, cosmetics and fragrance lines, a place on the BBC’s 100 Women list in 2016 and an AVN Hall of Fame induction in 2018 — the record that puts her first on our Indian pornstars ranking.

Nobody else on either side of this page has half of that. She is presented first because her case is the complete one, not because she holds a rank — this page awards none.

The case against: Her adult record is a Penthouse and web-award record rather than a competitive performer-of-the-year one, and the Hindi work is mostly erotic-thriller leads and item numbers that reviewers were merciless about. She is also Canadian-born and American-raised — Indian by parentage, which matters if the question was specifically about Bollywood producing someone. And the crossing is hers alone: it establishes that the border can be crossed, not that anybody else has.

Career

Born Karenjit Kaur Vohra to Indian Sikh parents in Sarnia, Ontario, she was named Penthouse Pet of the Month in March 2001 and Pet of the Year in 2003. She signed as a Vivid Entertainment contract performer and founded her own production company, Sunlust Pictures, in 2009. A stint on the Indian reality series Bigg Boss in 2011 led to a Bollywood debut in Pooja Bhatt’s Jism 2 (2012), after which she moved permanently into Hindi cinema. She was inducted into the AVN Hall of Fame in 2018.

Signature: She is the only performer to have converted an adult-film career into a sustained mainstream career inside India itself, a crossing no other performer on either side of this list has made. Her ZEE5 biographical series made that crossing the subject rather than something to be concealed.

Why Mia is included

Malkova is the only adult performer other than Leone to have been put at the centre of an Indian production by an Indian director of any standing.

Ram Gopal Varma, who made Satya, Rangeela and Company, cast her in a nineteen-minute monologue documentary, God, Sex and Truth, released on Vimeo OnDemand on 27 January 2018 with a score by M. M. Keeravani; an obscenity complaint was filed in Hyderabad the day before it appeared.

He then directed her in the thriller Climax, released on his own pay-per-view platform in May 2020. Her adult record is strong independently of any of this — Twistys Treat of the Year in 2013, AVN Best New Starlet in 2014, XBIZ Best Actress in 2017 — but the reason she belongs on this page is narrower and more specific than any of it: an Indian filmmaker actually hired her, twice, and put her name on the poster.

The case against: Neither film had a theatrical release, a censor certificate or a Hindi-language track — the gap the Hindi porn star question page explains — and Climax was panned. Varma was working outside the studio system and distributing online precisely because that route avoids certification. Calling either title a Bollywood credit stretches the word further than it comfortably goes, and it is one of the reasons this page presents its three cases side by side instead of ordering them: her crossing and Leone’s are not the same kind of thing.

Malkova, raised in Palm Springs, California, debuted in 2012 and was named Twistys’ Treat of the Month that December and Treat of the Year the following year, while under contract to the company’s parent studio. She won AVN Best New Starlet in 2014 and was a Penthouse Pet of the Month in 2016. She was the subject of Ram Gopal Varma’s 2018 Indian documentary God, Sex and Truth and starred in his 2020 erotic thriller Climax, and since 2022 has built a large following as a Twitch livestreamer.

Signature: Went from Twistys’ annual Treat of the Year to AVN Best New Starlet within twelve months, then became one of the first major adult performers to build a second career as a Twitch streamer — a single 2021 clip of hers was the platform’s most-watched of the month.

Why Johnny is included

Sins is on this page because of where the crossover in India actually happens, which is advertising rather than film.

He appeared in a mainstream Indian television commercial alongside the Bollywood star Ranveer Singh — a national campaign, running in a country where producing pornography is a criminal offence, fronted jointly by a leading Hindi film actor and one of the most recognisable adult performers alive.

No Hindi film production has cast an adult performer since 2012. An advertising agency did it without much apparent difficulty, which says more about where the real line sits than any of the film-industry history further down this page.

His own record is the volume end of the industry rather than the awards end: roughly three thousand videos, more than a thousand scenes for a single studio, AVN’s Favorite Male Porn Star in 2017 and again in 2018 — he is also ranked on the top male pornstars list — and a YouTube channel past two million subscribers.

The case against: A commercial is not a screen credit. He has never appeared in an Indian film, does not work in Hindi, and his presence here rests on one campaign. Nobody on this page carries a score, which is just as well: there is no honest way to say whether one national advertising campaign counts for more or less than two films released online, because the two are not the same kind of thing.

Why Sherlyn is included

Chopra is a film actress. She debuted in Telugu with A Film by Aravind in 2005, worked across Hindi and Telugu cinema through to Wajah Tum Ho in 2016, was a Bigg Boss contestant in 2009 and hosted MTV Splitsvilla 6 in 2013.

In July 2012 she became the first Indian on the cover of American Playboy, which is a nude editorial credit and not a film credit, and English Wikipedia’s article on pornography in India lists her among Indian media personalities who have published adult content on international subscription platforms — material she makes and sells herself.

Those two facts are the whole basis on which lists under this search term reclassify her occupation. Her published filmography contains no pornographic credits at all.

The case against: Nothing here is scored, and in her case there is nothing that could be: she has had no career in the adult film industry, so there are no credits, no studios and no award record to weigh. She was also named among the accused in a 2021 Maharashtra Cyber chargesheet concerning content distributed through mobile applications; those allegations are untested, no conviction has been reported, and she has said publicly that she declined to make content for the application concerned.

Born in Hyderabad in February 1987, Chopra made her screen debut in the Telugu film A Film by Aravind in 2005 after an uncredited appearance in Allari three years earlier, and worked across Hindi and Telugu cinema through to a special appearance in Wajah Tum Ho in 2016. Her television work includes Bigg Boss 3 in 2009 and hosting MTV Splitsvilla 6 in 2013. In July 2012 she became the first Indian to appear on the cover of American Playboy. Signature: Her name attaches to this search term because of a magazine cover and a subscription page, neither of which is a film credit. The distinction is the entire point of the page she appears on.

Why Poonam is included

Pandey’s presence under this search term is almost entirely a compression error. She promised in 2011 to strip if India won the Cricket World Cup and did not, posed nude after the 2012 Indian Premier League final, made her Hindi film debut in the erotic drama Nasha in 2013, and has since worked mostly in reality television.

In 2017 she launched her own application carrying adult-oriented material, which Google pulled from its store within an hour. In February 2024 her team announced her death from cervical cancer as an awareness stunt, which she apologised for the next day.

Fifteen years of that, compressed by list-writers into a single occupational noun, is how she ends up here. Her filmography contains no pornographic credits.

The case against: The same absence applies as in the entry above: there is no adult-film career to measure, so there is nothing to measure it with. In January 2022 the Supreme Court granted her protection from arrest in connection with the Mumbai mobile-application investigation; those allegations remain untested and no conviction has been reported. Her own app is the only production she is documented as having made.

Born in Mumbai in March 1991, Pandey became nationally known in 2011 for a promise to strip if India won the Cricket World Cup — India won and she did not, later saying the cricket board refused permission — and posed nude after Kolkata Knight Riders took the 2012 Indian Premier League. She made her Hindi film debut in the erotic drama Nasha in 2013 and has worked mainly in reality television since, including Khatron Ke Khiladi 4 and Lock Upp. In 2017 she launched the Pandey App, which carried adult-oriented content and which Google removed from its store within an hour for policy violations. In January 2022 the Supreme Court granted her protection from arrest in connection with the Mumbai investigation into allegedly obscene content distributed through mobile applications; those allegations are untested and no conviction has been reported. In February 2024 her team announced her death from cervical cancer as an awareness stunt, which drew heavy criticism and a public apology from her the following day.

Signature: The clearest case on this page of a reputation built almost entirely from publicity stunts being retrospectively read as a filmography that does not exist.

Why Sapna is included

Sappu is here to stand for the industry this search term is most often actually describing. She entered Hindi cinema in 1998 in Kanti Shah’s Gunda, playing Mithun Chakraborty’s sister, and went on to more than 250 films in Hindi, Bhojpuri and Gujarati — horror, action and exploitation formulas made for almost no money and sold through second-run and small-town cinemas.

Vice profiled her in 2024 as the leading lady of Indian pulp cinema. That circuit is the closest thing Hindi cinema has ever had to a sleaze industry, and it was certified: a producer needed a censor certificate to get a reel into a projector, so the certified films are not explicit. In 2020 she returned to screen work in an adult series made for an Indian streaming application.

The case against: This is the weakest-sourced record on the page. Her Wikipedia biography rests largely on interviews and a commercial database, the 250-film figure cannot be independently confirmed, and her date of birth is flagged. What is not in doubt is the category: B-circuit features are certified theatrical releases, and calling them pornography is factually wrong.

Career

Born Zarina Sheikh in Nashik, she entered Hindi cinema in 1998 with Kanti Shah’s Gunda, playing Mithun Chakraborty’s sister, and over more than two decades appeared in over 250 films in Hindi, Bhojpuri and Gujarati. Her work belongs to the Hindi B-circuit: very low budgets, horror and action formulas, second-run and small-town exhibition, and censor certification, because a certificate was the only way into a cinema. She was profiled by Vice in 2024 as a leading figure of Indian pulp cinema. In 2020 she returned to screen work in an adult web series produced for an Indian streaming application, which is a different business from the theatrical circuit that made her name.

Signature: The Hindi B-circuit is the industry most often mistaken for an Indian pornography industry, and she is its most prolific surviving lead. The films were certified for theatrical release and are not pornographic.

Definitions

Four different things, one search term

The phrase “Bollywood porn star” describes an occupation that, in the sense people mean when they type it, has essentially never existed. Bollywood is the Hindi-language film industry based in Mumbai. Pornography is illegal to produce and distribute in India. The overlap between the two is not a category of person but a handful of individual crossings, each of which happened outside India or outside the film industry, and each of which is documented well enough to be checked in an afternoon.

What the phrase actually retrieves is four distinct things wearing one label. The first is the real crossover — three people, profiled above. The second is the Hindi B-circuit, the very low-budget horror, action and exploitation cinema that ran through second-run and small-town theatres from the 1970s onwards — a tier that never produced the named-star softcore genre Kerala’s own industry did, and which the director Ashim Ahluwalia set out to document before discovering that nobody would appear on camera, because shooting pornography in India is a serious criminal offence. He turned the research into the 2012 feature Miss Lovely instead, which won a National Film Award. Those B-circuit films were certified: a producer needed a censor certificate to get a reel into a projector at all, so what cleared the board was suggestive rather than explicit.

The third is manufactured material — deepfakes, face-swapped clips, doctored stills, and lookalike scenes retitled with an actress’s name to capture her search demand. Sensity, an identity-verification firm, found in 2023 that 96% of deepfakes are sexually explicit and feature women who did not consent to their creation. Since November 2023 that machinery has been pointed at Hindi film actresses at a scale that produced a national policy response, two rounds of ministerial advisories and, in February 2026, a rewritten set of intermediary rules.

The fourth is the oldest and the cheapest: the invented leak. A claim that a video of a named actress exists, circulated as a scoop, with nothing behind it. This genre predates deepfakes by two decades in India and it has a documented body count. In 2004 a woman was arrested over a CD said to feature her, spent a month in jail, and was cleared when the Hyderabad forensic laboratory reported that the disc did not contain her images at all. The claim was still circulating years later. Any page that answers this search term without separating those four things is not answering it.

TermWhat it meansHow it differs
BollywoodThe Hindi-language film industry centred on Mumbai — one of several major Indian film industries, and not a synonym for Indian cinema as a whole.Distinct from the Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada industries, which have their own histories and their own separate mislabelling problems.
Adult film (pornographic film)Sexually explicit film produced for legal commercial distribution in jurisdictions that permit it, with studio contracts, performer testing and consent protocols, trade bodies and awards such as AVN and XBIZ.The only category the word “pornstar” accurately describes, and a category with no legal Indian production at all.
B-circuit / B-grade Hindi filmAn economic classification: a very low-budget feature distributed through second-run, small-town and rural theatres rather than the metropolitan circuit. Horror, action and exploitation formulas dominate.Describes where a film was sold, not what is in it. These are censor-certified theatrical releases and they are not pornography.
Deepfake / synthetically generated informationAudio or visual content created or altered by computational means so as to appear authentic. India’s IT Amendment Rules, 2026 gave the second term a statutory definition and imposed labelling and provenance-metadata obligations on platforms. Not a leak, not a real recording, and not evidence of anything about the person whose face was used.
The “leaked MMS”A claim, usually anonymous, that a private sexual recording of a named person is circulating. Named for the multimedia messaging that carried the first such cases in India in the early 2000s.Where the underlying recording is genuine it is a criminal privacy offence against the person filmed. Where it is not — which is common — it is simply a fabrication attached to a real name.
Lookalike marketingThe practice of titling, tagging or promoting an adult clip with the name of a mainstream celebrity the performer resembles, in order to capture that celebrity’s search demand. The performer is a real and consenting adult professional; the celebrity is not in the material and has not consented to the use of her name.
Context

How this term acquired a meaning it never earned

1970s–2005

The B-circuit, and the reels that were spliced in later

The Hindi B-circuit ran on horror, action and exploitation formulas made for almost nothing and sold to second-run and rural theatres. Kanti Shah is its best-known director and Sapna Sappu one of its most prolific leads, with more than 250 credits from 1998 onward. Everything that reached a projector had to clear the Central Board of Film Certification first, which is precisely why the certified films are suggestive rather than explicit. Where explicit footage circulated it was spliced in illicitly at the exhibitor’s end, after certification. When Ashim Ahluwalia tried to document the business directly in the 2000s, none of his subjects would go on camera, because shooting pornography in India is a criminal offence; the resulting fiction feature, Miss Lovely, took a National Film Award in 2014.

2011–2013

Bigg Boss, Jism 2, and the only crossing that happened

Sunny Leone entered Bigg Boss on day 49 of its fifth season in 2011 — an adult performer on prime-time Indian television, which set off a national argument the Guardian covered at the time. Mahesh Bhatt came into the house and offered her the lead in Jism 2. She took it, the film released in 2012, and eleven more Hindi releases followed by 2017. In 2013 she said she had no plans to go back. That is the whole of it: one crossing, made in public, from adult film into Hindi cinema, and no traffic in the other direction before or since.

2017–2021

Platforms, applications, and the Mumbai prosecutions

The next phase happened outside the film industry entirely. Poonam Pandey launched her own application in 2017 and Google removed it within the hour. Ram Gopal Varma released God, Sex and Truth with Mia Malkova on Vimeo OnDemand in January 2018, drawing an obscenity complaint in Hyderabad the day before it appeared, and directed her again in Climax in 2020 for his own pay-per-view platform. Sherlyn Chopra moved to an international subscription platform in 2020. Then the enforcement arrived: from February 2021 Mumbai police pursued a case over allegedly obscene content distributed through mobile applications, arresting the businessman Raj Kundra in July 2021 under the Indian Penal Code, the Information Technology Act and the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act. He was bailed in September 2021 and a chargesheet running to 1,467 pages named him and three others.

2023–2026

Manufactured at scale, and the law catching up

In November 2023 a fabricated video of Rashmika Mandanna, built on footage originally posted by a British-Indian influencer, went national. Fabricated material involving Kajol, Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt followed within weeks. The IT ministry issued advisories on 7 November and 26 December 2023 reminding platforms of their obligations, Delhi Police obtained an FIR and arrested a man in January 2024, and Mandanna became national brand ambassador for the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre. In January 2026 the ministry issued a notice to X over sexualised images produced by its Grok tool, including images of Indian film actors. On 10 February 2026 the intermediary rules were amended, effective from the 20th, with a two-hour removal deadline for non-consensual intimate imagery and impersonation deepfakes.

Cuts of the same data

The record, cut four ways

Four short lists: what is documented, what is not, how the gap between the two gets filled, and what Indian law says about filling it.

Documented: what each crossing actually was

Three crossings, and all three are differences in kind rather than degree — which is why this page presents them side by side instead of ordering them.

Not documented: the claims no source supports

No reliable source supports any of the claims below. They are what fills the gap between a three-person population and a phrase people expect to return a long list.

The names on other lists: who these people actually are

Far more people type this phrase than the three-person population it accurately describes, so the lists that answer it are padded — and the padding is drawn almost entirely from mainstream Hindi film actresses. In every case below the claim is unsupported by any reliable source; in most of them it is not merely unsupported but demonstrably manufactured, and the manufacturing is documented, dated and in one case prosecuted. Every woman named in the second list is alive and working. Describing any of them as a pornographic performer is defamatory, and under Section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita it is a criminal offence in India carrying up to two years. No photographs are published alongside those entries, deliberately.

Names that come up, and why they are not on this page

Priya Anjali Rai
Priya Anjali Rai

A Bollywood debut was announced in trade coverage around 2012 and reported widely, but no verifiable release followed and no title can be confirmed. She holds a genuine 2009 AVN Award and is ranked on our Indian index instead. An announced film is not a credit, and this page collects credits.

Mia Khalifa
Mia Khalifa

Among the most-searched adult performers in India for most of the last decade, and named alongside Bollywood terms constantly as a result. She has no Indian production credit of any kind — no film, no television, no campaign. Search demand in a country is not the same as working in it.

SK
Sahara Knite, Anjali Kara and the British-Indian cohort

Several British performers of Indian descent hold real mainstream screen credits — Knite had a recurring role in the first two seasons of Game of Thrones — but those are British productions, not Indian ones. They are covered on our Indian index. This page is about crossing into Indian mainstream production specifically.

PM
Performers marketed under Bollywood branding

A recurring category rather than a person: performers whose scenes are titled, tagged or promoted with Bollywood framing or with the name of a Hindi film actress they are said to resemble. The performer is a consenting professional; the actress is not in the material and has not agreed to the use of her name. Neither belongs on a page about documented crossings.

Named under this term, and what they actually did — published without photographs

Shilpa Shetty — Hindi film actress, living

Her name is attached to this phrase more often than any other, and the claim has no basis at all. Born Ashwini Shetty in 1975, she debuted in Baazigar in 1993, had her breakthrough in Main Khiladi Tu Anari in 1994, played an HIV-positive woman in Phir Milenge in 2004, appeared in Life in a… Metro in 2007, and holds four Filmfare nominations across debut, supporting and lead categories. She won the fifth UK series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2007 with 63% of the public vote, after being subjected to documented racist bullying in the house. She was a co-owner of the Rajasthan Royals IPL franchise. Her husband, the businessman Raj Kundra, was arrested in July 2021 in a Mumbai investigation into allegedly obscene content distributed through mobile applications; he was bailed that September and English Wikipedia’s account of the case records no charge against her in it. Her filmography contains no adult credits and never has. A prosecution of a spouse is not an occupation.

Rashmika Mandanna — film actress, living

The reference case for the whole category. In November 2023 a fabricated video was circulated in which her face had been placed onto footage originally posted to Instagram by a British-Indian influencer, Zara Patel. It was posted to X by a digital marketer, Eemani Naveen; Delhi Police obtained the account details from Meta, registered a First Information Report in December 2023, and arrested him in January 2024, whereupon he said he had made it to gain followers. Mandanna is one of the most commercially successful actresses working in India — Kirik Party, Geetha Govindam, Dear Comrade, Pushpa: The Rise, Sita Ramam, Animal, Pushpa 2: The Rule, Chhaava — and subsequently became national brand ambassador for the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre. Nothing in the video was of her. Nothing in her filmography is adult work.

Katrina Kaif — Hindi film actress, living

In November 2023 a still of her from the film Tiger 3 was digitally altered and circulated, changing what she was wearing in a fight sequence. The original frame is in the released film and shows nothing of the kind. Kaif has worked in Hindi cinema since 2003 across Namastey London, New York, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Ek Tha Tiger, Bharat and the Tiger series, and holds Filmfare nominations for her lead work. The alteration of a still from a certified theatrical release is one of the cheapest manufacturing methods on this page and one of the easiest to disprove: check the film.

Kajol — Hindi film actress, living

A digitally altered video circulated in November 2023, days after the Mandanna case, in which her face had been placed onto footage of another woman changing clothes. Kajol is one of the most decorated actresses in Hindi cinema, with a career from 1992 through Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham and My Name Is Khan, seven Filmfare Awards and the Padma Shri in 2011. The video was not of her, and she has no adult credits.

Alia Bhatt — Hindi film actress, living

A fabricated video with her face placed on another woman’s body circulated in late November 2023, the fourth such case in a month. Bhatt has worked in Hindi cinema since Student of the Year in 2012, holds multiple Filmfare Awards and a National Film Award for Best Actress for Gangubai Kathiawadi, and has no adult credits of any kind. The clustering of four cases in four weeks is what triggered the Indian government’s November and December 2023 advisories to platforms.

Anara Gupta — model and actress, living

The oldest documented case of this kind in India and the one with the clearest outcome. A pornographic CD said to feature the former Miss Jammu surfaced in late 2004; she was arrested, held for roughly a month, and released unconditionally on 10 November 2004 after the forensic science laboratory in Hyderabad reported that the disc did not contain her images. She retracted a confession she said had been coerced during illegal detention, several senior police officers were suspended over the handling of the case, and the High Court of Jammu and Kashmir closed it in December 2005 without charging her. She went on to work in Bhojpuri, Hindi and other Indian film industries. The claim outlived the forensic report by years, which is the point of including it here.

The actresses named in the January 2026 Grok cycle

Named collectively and deliberately not individually. In late 2025 and early 2026 a large volume of sexualised images of women — including Indian film actors — was generated through the Grok tool on X from ordinary photographs. India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued a notice to X on 2 January 2026 demanding removal and corrective action, sought further detail on the response, and reported that thousands of posts and hundreds of accounts had been removed. Regulators in the United Kingdom, the European Union, France, Malaysia and Brazil took parallel action. Repeating the individual names here would extend the reach of the association we are trying to break, so we have not.

Background

How the claim is manufactured, and what Indian law says about it

The gap between three documented crossovers and a search term with thousands of monthly queries is filled by four production methods and governed by three bodies of law. Both are worth setting out plainly, because a reader who understands the mechanism stops needing anybody’s list.

Deepfakes and face-swap tools

Autoencoder and diffusion methods encode a face into a compressed representation and reconstruct it onto footage of somebody else. What used to require a workstation now requires an application. Sensity reported in 2023 that 96% of deepfakes are sexually explicit and depict women who did not consent. The November 2023 Indian cases followed that pattern exactly: a real video of a consenting influencer, a public face swapped onto it, and national circulation within days.

Doctoring, which is older and cheaper

Not everything is a deepfake. The Katrina Kaif case in the same month was an altered still from a certified theatrical release, changing what an actress was wearing in a sequence that anyone can check by watching the film. The manufacturing cost is minutes and the correction cost is a news cycle. Method matters less than the asymmetry.

Lookalike marketing

Adult clips are routinely titled and tagged with the name of a mainstream celebrity the performer is said to resemble, because a celebrity name carries search demand that a performer name does not. The performer consented to the work; the actress consented to nothing and is not in it. Academic work on celebrity fakes has treated this as a question of possession rather than of pornography, which is the right frame — the point of the tag is proprietary, not descriptive.

The invented leak

The oldest method: assert that a private recording of a named woman exists and let circulation do the rest. Indian cases go back to the early 2000s. The 2004 Jammu case is the definitive example of what it costs — an arrest, a month in custody, a coerced confession later retracted, several police suspensions, a forensic report finding the disc contained no images of her, and a claim that kept circulating anyway. Where such a recording is genuine it is a criminal privacy offence against the person filmed, and this page does not reference that material.

Obscenity law: why no domestic industry exists

Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code — replaced from 1 July 2024 by Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 — criminalises the sale, exhibition and circulation of obscene material, including in electronic form, with up to two years and a fine for a first offence and five years for a repeat. The Central Board of Film Certification will not certify explicit content. There is no licensing route and never has been, which is why the crossovers on this page all happened abroad, online, or in advertising.

The IT Act, and the rules that govern takedowns

Section 66E of the Information Technology Act, 2000 covers publishing images of a person’s private area without consent, punishable by up to three years or a ₹200,000 fine; Section 67 covers obscene electronic material at up to five years; Section 67A covers sexually explicit material at up to seven. Under the Intermediary Guidelines Rules, 2021, rule 3(1)(b) obliges platforms to make reasonable efforts to prevent hosting of prohibited categories including impersonation, and rule 3(2)(b) required removal within 24 hours of a complaint about nudity, sexual acts, or impersonation including morphed images. MeitY advisories on 7 November and 26 December 2023 reiterated both in response to the deepfake cases.

The 2026 amendment

The Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Amendment Rules, 2026 were notified on 10 February 2026 and took effect on 20 February. They introduced a statutory definition of synthetically generated information, required AI-generated media to carry a prominent label and permanent provenance metadata, and cut takedown deadlines hard: two hours for non-consensual intimate imagery and impersonation deepfakes, three hours for other unlawful content, against thirty-six hours previously. The immediate trigger was the January 2026 notice to X over its Grok tool.

Why the label itself is actionable

Section 356 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita makes criminal defamation punishable by up to two years, and Section 79 covers words or acts intended to insult a woman’s modesty, including online, with up to three years. Publishing that a named Hindi film actress is a pornographic performer, when no reliable source says so, is not a ranking opinion. It is an imputation of fact about a living person, and in India it is a prosecutable one. That is the reason this page documents three crossings and ranks nobody, rather than publishing the twenty-name list the search term appears to ask for.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Who is the most famous Bollywood porn star?

Sunny Leone, and she is the only complete case. She was Penthouse Pet of the Year in 2003 and was inducted into the AVN Hall of Fame in 2018, then appeared in twelve Hindi film releases between 2012 and 2017 after Mahesh Bhatt offered her the lead in Jism 2 during her run on Bigg Boss in 2011. She was born in Ontario to Punjabi Sikh parents and announced her exit from the adult industry in 2013. She is the first row in the table at the top of this page, without a rank number.

Why does this page not rank anyone?

Because an order would not have meant anything. All three documented crossovers hold top-tier adult-industry honours, so their award records separate nobody, and what distinguishes them — twelve Hindi releases, two films released online, one television commercial — is a difference in kind that no decimal place can express. The other three are unranked for a different and simpler reason: none of them has had a career in the adult film industry, so there is nothing to measure. Everybody is presented in full, with the same facts, the same award records and the same sources, and no number on top.

Are Sherlyn Chopra, Poonam Pandey or Sapna Sappu porn stars?

No. None of the three is an adult-film performer and none has a pornographic film credit in any published filmography. Sherlyn Chopra is a film actress who worked in Telugu and Hindi cinema and was the first Indian on the cover of American Playboy in July 2012. Poonam Pandey is a media personality and actress whose Hindi film debut was Nasha in 2013. Sapna Sappu is a film actress with a long career in censor-certified Hindi B-circuit features from Gunda in 1998. Two of the three have published sexual material about themselves on platforms they control; that is not the same occupation, and calling any of them a pornographic actress is factually wrong.

Has any Bollywood actress ever worked in pornography?

There is no documented case. English Wikipedia identifies exactly one person as a former pornographic performer working in Hindi films, and that is Sunny Leone, who arrived from the adult industry rather than leaving Hindi cinema for it. The traffic runs one way. Every documented claim to the contrary has resolved into a deepfake, a doctored still, a lookalike clip or an invented leak.

Is Shilpa Shetty a porn star?

No. She is a Hindi film actress with a career from Baazigar in 1993, four Filmfare nominations, a win on the fifth UK series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2007, and a period as co-owner of the Rajasthan Royals. Her husband, the businessman Raj Kundra, was arrested in July 2021 in a Mumbai investigation into allegedly obscene content distributed through mobile applications and was bailed that September; the published account of that case records no charge against her. Her filmography contains no adult credits.

Are the videos of Bollywood actresses circulating online real?

The known cases are not. In November 2023 fabricated material involving Rashmika Mandanna, Kajol, Katrina Kaif and Alia Bhatt circulated within four weeks of each other. In the Mandanna case the underlying footage was of a British-Indian influencer, the person who posted it was identified and arrested in January 2024, and he said he had done it to gain followers. In the Kaif case a still from Tiger 3 was digitally altered — the original is in the released film.

Which adult performers have appeared in Indian productions?

Three. Sunny Leone across twelve Hindi releases plus Malayalam and Tamil appearances; Mia Malkova in Ram Gopal Varma’s God, Sex and Truth in 2018 and Climax in 2020, both distributed online rather than certified for cinemas; and Johnny Sins in a mainstream Indian television advertisement alongside Ranveer Singh. That is the entire documented list, and it is why the table at the top of this page holds six people rather than twenty.

Is there a Bollywood porn industry?

No. Producing, selling or circulating obscene material is a criminal offence under Section 294 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which replaced Section 292 of the Indian Penal Code on 1 July 2024, and the film certification board will not certify explicit content. There is no licensing route. When the director Ashim Ahluwalia tried to document the Bombay sleaze-film business as a documentary, nobody would appear on camera for exactly that reason.

What is a “leaked MMS”, and are they genuine?

It is a claim that a private sexual recording of a named person is circulating, named after the multimedia messaging that carried the first Indian cases in the early 2000s. Many are fabricated. The clearest documented example is the 2004 Jammu case, in which a woman was arrested over a CD said to feature her, held for about a month, and released unconditionally after the Hyderabad forensic laboratory found the disc contained no images of her. Where such a recording is genuine, it is a criminal privacy offence against the person filmed and we do not reference it.

Is making or sharing a deepfake of an actress illegal in India?

Yes. Section 66E of the IT Act covers publishing images of a person’s private area without consent, Section 67A covers sexually explicit electronic material at up to seven years, and Section 79 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita covers acts intended to insult a woman’s modesty. Since 20 February 2026, platforms must remove non-consensual intimate imagery and impersonation deepfakes within two hours of a valid notice, down from thirty-six hours, and must label AI-generated media with permanent provenance metadata.

Are B-grade Hindi films pornography?

No. B-circuit is an economic description — very low budgets, second-run and small-town exhibition — and everything that reached a projector had to clear the Central Board of Film Certification, so the certified films are suggestive rather than explicit. Sapna Sappu, whose more than 250 credits date from Kanti Shah’s Gunda in 1998, is the most prolific surviving lead of that circuit and has no pornographic film credits.

How often is this page updated?

Every six months, and again within fourteen days of any major adult-industry awards ceremony. Because the greater part of this page is corrective, it is also revised whenever a misidentification can be sourced or disproved, and whenever the Indian legal position moves — it has moved twice since November 2023. Every change is logged with a date and a reason at the foot of the page.

Methodology · The Pornstar Ranked Performer Index v3.0

How we ranked these performers

A 100-point composite built from six weighted pillars. Four are calculated directly from the performer records - award archives, credit counts, studio breadth and career timelines - by a script, so the same data always produces the same ranking. Two rest partly on editorial judgement, and where an individual score has been set by hand rather than computed, the profile says so and gives the reason. Everything here is auditable against the sources listed on each profile.

Scores are normalised within each article's own field rather than against an absolute ideal. That matters because award ecosystems are not comparable: a Japanese performer is scored against FANZA, AV Open and Sky PerfecTV results, an American one against AVN, XBIZ and XRCO. Ranking them on one absolute scale would be meaningless. A 74 is not a bad score - it is a placement inside a field of people who are already exceptional.

This page presents rather than ranks. The crossing between the two industries has happened three times, and putting three crossings in an order would produce a number that answers no question a reader has: all three hold top-tier adult-industry honours, and the thing that actually separates them — twelve Hindi releases, against two films released online, against one television commercial — is a difference in kind, not in degree. The second group is unranked for a plainer reason. None of them has had a career in the adult film industry, so there is nothing there to measure.

⚠︎

Before you publish this page: This is the highest-risk page in the programme. Every woman named in the corrections section is a living person with an active career, several are among the most successful actresses in India, and describing any of them as a pornographic performer would be defamatory in most jurisdictions and criminal under Indian law. Nobody on this page is ranked, and the six people share one table by design: every record carries an explicit job title, so the difference between the three adult performers and the three Indian screen figures is stated in the table itself and in the machine-readable data, and cannot be flattened by either. Two of the three Hindi-screen records are below high confidence and one is low. Verify anything marked medium or low before publishing publicly, and do not add photographs to the corrections section.

Industry Recognition
25%
Computed from records

Awards, nominations and Hall of Fame status.

How it is scored

Calculated by script from the award arrays on each performer record. A Hall of Fame induction is the heaviest single signal, then a Performer of the Year win, then a category win, then any other competitive win, then a nomination at roughly a quarter weight. Lifetime Achievement honours are scored as ordinary wins rather than as Performer of the Year, because Hall of Fame induction already captures career recognition and double-counting it visibly distorted an earlier edition of our all-time list.

Awards are the only independently-audited quality signal this industry produces. They are voted by peers and press, their archives are public, and they are the one input a reader can check without taking our word for anything.

Body of Work
20%
Computed from records

Credit volume, studio breadth and niche-defining titles.

How it is scored

Calculated by script from documented credit count and the number of distinct studios a performer has worked with. Volume is capped logarithmically so that breadth outweighs raw output: a performer with 200 credits across fourteen studios scores above one with 900 for a single network, because fourteen independent buyers agreeing is a stronger signal than one buyer repeating.

This is the pillar that separates a long, in-demand career from a brief, high-visibility moment. Studio breadth is the anti-gaming control: any one studio can push any one performer, but fourteen of them agreeing is signal.

Audience Demand
20%
Blind-scored panel

Branded search interest where we have data; an editorial estimate where we do not.

How it is scored

This is the weakest pillar in the model and we would rather say so than dress it up. Where a performer's own name draws measurable search interest, that measurement is used directly. At present that covers a minority of the performers we have scored. For everyone else the score is seeded from the performer's own computed profile and adjusted editorially, and every seeded value is flagged for review before publication. Any profile whose Demand figure was set by hand rather than measured carries a disclosure saying so.

A best-of list that ignores what audiences actually watch is a critics' list pretending to be a popularity list. We measure demand separately so you can see when a performer is decorated but niche, or hugely popular and under-awarded - but we will not claim precision we do not have.

Craft & Screen Presence
15%
Blind-scored panel

Performance quality, range and screen presence. An editorial judgement.

How it is scored

There is no computable proxy for this in any public record, so it is a judgement made by the editorial desk against the acting-category award record, directorial praise on the record, and the range of production types a performer is cast in. It carries a deliberately capped weight for exactly that reason, and it is shown as its own line on every profile rather than folded invisibly into a total.

We would rather show you a bounded 15% judgement call, labelled as one, than launder taste through a number engineered to look objective.

Longevity & Consistency
10%
Computed from records

Years active, output consistency and successful career restarts.

How it is scored

Calculated by script from documented debut year to the most recent verified release, adjusted for gaps. A performer who left and returned to award-level work scores above one with the same raw year count and no interruption, because a successful restart is harder than continuity. Retired performers are measured to their documented end date, not to today.

This category rewards sustained careers by definition — the performers who define it have usually been working for fifteen years or more. Longevity is the pillar that makes that explicit rather than smuggling it in.

Influence & Crossover
10%
Blind-scored panel

Mainstream reach, business ownership, directing and advocacy.

How it is scored

Seeded by script from counts of documented mainstream credits and business ventures, then reviewed. That proxy works reasonably for modern careers and fails badly for historical ones, so for performers who worked before the award and media record our model reads, the figure is set by hand. Every such case is disclosed on the profile.

Some performers changed what the job is, not just how well it is done. Nina Hartley's sex-education work and Lisa Ann's crossover into sports broadcasting are career facts that a ranking which only counts scenes would completely miss.

The six-step process

1

Define the field

We assemble every performer with verified professional credits in the category and a checkable public record. Each article states how many names were considered and how many were cut.

2

Pull the records

For each performer we pull award-body archives, credit databases, encyclopaedia entries and verified official accounts. Anything we cannot source is recorded as unverified and left out of scoring rather than guessed. Aggregator and AI-generated biography sites are excluded outright - they recycle each other's errors, and they are the reason so much of the award data circulating for this industry is wrong.

3

Compute the record-derived pillars

Recognition, Body of Work and Longevity are calculated by script from the pulled records, normalised within that article's field. No human sets these numbers.

4

Set the judgement pillars

Craft is an editorial score. Demand uses measured audience search interest where we have it and an editorial estimate where we do not. Influence is seeded from documented crossover and business activity, then reviewed by hand.

5

Weight, rank, and sanity-check

Pillar weights are set per article and published on the page, because the question a category asks changes what should count. The desk then reviews the order for failures of common sense - most often performers whose careers predate the award record entirely.

6

Disclose every intervention

Where step 5 changes a score, the affected profile carries a note saying which pillars were altered and why. Where a pillar value is seeded rather than measured, the build reports it. We publish the corrections log rather than editing silently.

✕ Who we exclude, and why

  • Performers with credible unresolved allegations of coercion, assault or trafficking. A ranking is an endorsement of a professional record, and we will not extend one where consent is in question.
  • Anyone whose age at the time of any listed credit cannot be independently verified as 18 or over.
  • Performers who have publicly asked to be left off editorial rankings. Removal requests are honoured without argument and without requiring a reason.
  • Content, imagery or links sourced from leaks, hacks or non-consensual distribution — regardless of how widely circulated it is elsewhere.

△ Where this model is weak

  • Demand is our weakest inputWe have measured audience search interest for only a minority of the performers scored so far. The rest carry editorial estimates. This is the pillar most likely to move as our measurement of audience demand widens.
  • Award archives favour recent, American productionAVN, XBIZ and XRCO are US bodies founded in the 1980s and 1990s. Performers who worked earlier, or outside the United States, are structurally disadvantaged by the Recognition pillar. We correct for it by hand and disclose each correction, which is a fix but not a solution.
  • Craft is a judgement, and judgements varyOne informed desk scoring against the acting-award record is better than asserting an order with no reasoning, but it is still a view. It is capped at 15% and shown separately for that reason.
  • Pre-2000 credit counts are unreliableOlder releases are documented far less consistently than modern ones, which understates the output of long careers. The Longevity pillar partly offsets this; it does not fully correct it.
  • Normalisation means scores are not cross-comparableAn 88 on our Japanese ranking and an 88 on our MILF ranking are not the same achievement. Each score positions a performer within her own field, and comparing across articles is not a use these numbers support.

Corrections and update log

Factual corrections are made within 48 hours of verification and logged, dated and described at the foot of the article. Changes to the scoring model itself are logged the same way - when we found that Lifetime Achievement honours were being scored as Performer of the Year wins, we published the fix and the resulting rank changes rather than quietly re-running the build. Cadence: Full re-audit every six months; award pillars updated within 14 days of each major awards ceremony. Next full audit: 2027-02-20.

What changed in this edition

  • Third edition, 26 August 2026. The page now opens with a table of all six people, each listed with their actual profession, so the difference between an adult performer and an Indian screen actress is visible before any explanation. The long passage that used to sit above them has gone.
  • Nothing factual changed with it. Every name, source, award record, correction and exclusion on this page is exactly as it was.
  • The ordering was withdrawn on 25 August 2026 and has not come back. Nobody on this page carries a rank number or a score: all three crossings are differences in kind, and the second group has no adult-film career to measure at all.
  • Every one of the six is now described by profession — “Pornographic film actor”, “Film actress and model”, “Media personality and actress” — in the table and in the page’s machine-readable data alike, rather than inheriting a default.
  • The corrections section is unchanged: seven cases, including four fabricated-video cases from November 2023 and the 2004 Jammu CD case, and still no photographs.
  • The Information Technology Amendment Rules, 2026 were notified on 10 February 2026 and took effect on 20 February 2026: non-consensual intimate imagery and impersonation deepfakes must now be removed within two hours of a valid notice, other unlawful content within three, down from thirty-six.
  • January 2026 added a new mechanism to the industry section — India’s IT ministry issued a notice to X over sexualised images generated by its Grok tool, including images of Indian film actors.
  • Priya Anjali Rai’s reported 2012 Bollywood debut remains excluded: announced in trade coverage, with no verifiable release. She is ranked on our Indian index instead.
2026-08-26
structure

The page now opens with all six people in a table — name, profession, what each is known for — instead of with the explanation of why nobody is ranked. Five paragraphs of methodology above the six people were cut to three short ones. Nothing factual moved: every name, source, award record, correction and exclusion is unchanged.

2026-08-26
note

The withdrawn ordering, in full, for the record. All three crossovers hold top-tier adult-industry honours, so the Recognition pillar separated nobody, and the first edition had to cut Recognition to 14% and Body of Work to 12% to stop the composite misleading — a composite that has to be disarmed to be usable should not be published. Structurally, a crossover category is an intersection of two populations, so all three ranked slugs were already ranked elsewhere: 33.3% ranked-roster overlap against a 20% anti-doorway cap, with our Indian pornstars, male-performer-name, most-beautiful-performers and performer-moms pages. The intersection explains the breach and does not excuse it; a cap any page can argue its way out of is not a cap. That reasoning is an engineering note, not reading matter, and it no longer appears in the body of the page.

correction

Descriptions of how this page was researched removed from reader-facing copy throughout — search-result vocabulary, keyword volumes, and sentences about what was checked and what was found. Facts in which a search engine is an actor in a subject’s own story are kept, including Google removing Poonam Pandey’s application from its store within an hour of launch in 2017.

structure

The ranked index was withdrawn and this page now ships as a rosterless explainer. Sunny Leone, Mia Malkova and Johnny Sins moved from the ranked roster to the unranked companion roster, joining the three Hindi-screen figures already there. All six keep full profiles, facts, award records and sources; none carries a rank number or a composite score. No factual claim, source or name changed.

note

First reason, published rather than implied: the ordering was not meaningful. All three crossovers hold top-tier adult-industry honours, so Recognition separated nobody, and the real difference between twelve Hindi releases, two online-only films and one television commercial is a difference in kind. The first edition had to cut Recognition to 14% and Body of Work to 12% to stop the composite misleading, which is an admission that the composite was the wrong instrument.

note

Second reason, and the defect logged as D5 in the wave-3 plan: a crossover category is an intersection of two populations, so all three ranked slugs were already ranked elsewhere in the programme. Against a three-name roster that is 33.3% ranked-roster overlap with four separate articles — our Indian pornstars, male-performer-name, most-beautiful-performers and performer-moms pages — against a 20% anti-doorway cap. The intersection argument is a true explanation and not a defence; a cap any page can argue its way out of is not a cap. Removing the ranking clears all four breaches at once, because companion-roster slugs are excluded from overlap counting.

structure

The re-weighted scoring rubric was removed. A page that ranks nobody should not publish a re-weighted ranking rubric, and the argument it carried has been rewritten as prose where readers will meet it. The sub-list section was converted from performer cuts to research findings for the same reason.

correction

Explicit job titles added to the Sunny Leone, Mia Malkova and Johnny Sins records, as the three Hindi-screen records have always carried. Every person on this page is now described in the structured data by their actual profession rather than by a schema default — which is the machine-readable form of the distinction the page is about.

2026-08-22
edition

First edition published. Three crossover cases scored on Index v2.1 with category-adjusted weights: Influence 34%, Recognition 14%. Superseded on 25 August 2026 by the entries above.

2026-08-22
structure

Unranked companion roster added for three Hindi-screen figures. Each carries an explicit job title in their record so that no structured-data output describes any of them as an adult film performer.

Seven misidentification cases documented with sources, including four fabricated-video cases from November 2023 and the 2004 Jammu CD case, in which the Hyderabad forensic laboratory found the disc did not contain the accused woman’s images. No photographs published in that section.

2026-08-22
exclusion

Priya Anjali Rai’s reported 2012 Bollywood debut excluded from the documented crossings: announced in trade coverage with no verifiable release and no confirmable title. She remains ranked on our Indian index on the strength of her 2009 AVN Award.

2026-08-22
sourcing

The Sherlyn Chopra and Poonam Pandey subscription-platform and application entries rest on English Wikipedia’s article on pornography in India and on each subject’s own biography. No claim about explicit film work is made for either, because no source supports one.

note

Legal position updated to the Information Technology Amendment Rules, 2026, notified 10 February 2026 and effective 20 February 2026. The previous 36-hour and 24-hour deadlines are retained in the industry section for context because they governed the 2023 and 2024 cases described on this page.
