Silk Smitha
Career
Born Vadlapati Vijayalakshmi in coastal Andhra Pradesh, she took the screen name Silk after her breakthrough role in the 1979 Tamil film Vandichakkaram. Over seventeen years she appeared in more than 450 films in five languages, playing cabaret dancers, vamps and, from the late 1980s, leads in Malayalam softcore features including Layanam (1989). Her commercial pull was such that distributors could sell shelved films simply by inserting a Silk Smitha song. She died by suicide in Chennai in September 1996.
Signature: She was a distribution mechanism as much as an actress: her presence in a reel was itself the product being sold, which is why her career spans prestige mainstream cinema and the softcore circuit simultaneously.
