Career
Born Shakeela Begum in Chennai, she made her debut in the softcore film Playgirls in 1995 at eighteen. Her breakthrough was the Malayalam film Kinnara Thumbikal (2000), which grossed roughly ₹40 million against a budget of about ₹1.2 million and was dubbed into six languages, triggering the period the Malayalam trade called the Shakeela tharangam, or Shakeela wave. The film scholar Darshana Sreedhar Mini has argued that during the Malayalam industry’s early-2000s crisis the profitability of her films was essential to the survival of the sector’s workforce. From 2003 she moved into family and character roles, published an autobiography in 2013, and was the subject of a 2020 biopic starring Richa Chadha.
Signature: She is the only performer in either group whose name became a genre label — Malayalam soft-porn films were colloquially called Shakeela films — and the only one whose commercial output has been the subject of sustained academic study.
