Lizzy Borden
Career
Janet Romano performed and directed for Extreme Associates, the company she ran with her then-husband Rob Zicari. The pair and the company were indicted in the Western District of Pennsylvania in 2003 over films sold by mail and online, and the case ran for six years, including a dismissal that the Third Circuit reversed. Both pleaded guilty in March 2009 to one count of conspiracy to distribute obscene material. On 1 July 2009 each was sentenced to one year and one day in prison plus two years of supervised release; CBS News reported her telling the court at sentencing that she had not known making pornography would destroy her life. She began the sentence in September 2009 and was released in May 2010.
Signature: One of very few performers ever imprisoned in the United States over the content of a film rather than over anything that happened on a set.
