Jyothi Lakshmi
Career
A trained dancer, she debuted in 1963 performing the song "Yaaradi Vanthaar" in Vanambadi, and by the early 1970s was taking leading roles built around her dance numbers, ahead of the item-number terminology that would later describe the same function. Her recorded work spans more than fifty years and five South Indian and Hindi-language industries, with later supporting roles in Muthu (1995), Sethu (1999) and Siruthai (2011). She died in Chennai in August 2016. Her daughter, Jyothi Meena, followed her into the same item-number tradition a generation later.
Signature: She predates the "item number" as a named category by roughly two decades, working the same dance-sequence function under 1960s and 1970s Tamil cinema’s own vocabulary for it.
