Pauline Chan Bo-Lin
Career
Born in Shanghai and relocated to Hong Kong at twelve, she worked as a fashion model from fifteen before entering Category III film in 1991 at eighteen. She appeared in more than 25 Category III titles through 1997 and was a prominent sex symbol across the Greater China region. Hou Hsiao-hsien recruited her to dub the Mandarin dialogue for Michiko Hada's character Shen Xiaohong in Flowers of Shanghai (1998) — an off-screen voice role, not an acting credit — and was impressed enough to later consider her for a role in Millennium Mambo (2001); that collaboration did not go forward as her personal life deteriorated after 1999, and the part went to Shu Qi instead. Her later life was marked by serious personal difficulties; she gave birth to a son in June 2002 and died by suicide in Shanghai in July 2002, aged 29. A biopic, Pauline’s Life, was released later that year.
Signature: One of the few Category III leads whose work reached an internationally recognised art-house director, though only as an off-screen dubbing voice; a considered on-screen role with Hou Hsiao-hsien never materialised.
