Amy Yip
Career
Born in Hong Kong to a barber father, she trained as an ATV entertainment contract player before Golden Harvest founder Raymond Chow signed her on the condition that she would not appear fully nude. Her 1990 role in Erotic Ghost Story made her the defining face of the Category III boom, and she appeared in over twenty films between 1990 and 1992, including Robotrix and Sex and Zen. She retired from acting in 1997 and moved into hospitality, now owning a boutique hotel in Malaysia and sitting as a non-executive director of a hotel-management company. Her nickname, applied to her physique, is credited by some accounts with giving Taiwanese bubble tea’s tapioca pearls their common Chinese name.
Signature: Category III cinema’s single most commercially significant star, and proof the genre could produce a mainstream-adjacent career rather than a dead end.
