Bob Chinn
Career
Born in Hawaii to Chinese immigrant parents who later settled in California, Chinn graduated from UCLA film school in 1966 and began directing adult films around 1970. He created and directed the nine-film Johnny Wadd series starring John Holmes between 1971 and 1978, one of the defining franchises of the American industry’s first commercial decade, and returned to direct a further Johnny Wadd series in the 2000s. He was inducted into the XRCO Hall of Fame’s Film Creators branch in 1987 and the AVN Hall of Fame in 1999 — both independently confirmed against the two bodies’ own published member lists. He published a two-volume memoir, The Other Side of Paradise, in 2016, and was a featured interview subject in the 1999 documentary Wadd: The Life & Times of John C. Holmes.
Signature: The only director on this page, included because he is also credited as an on-screen actor and because his double Hall of Fame induction — AVN and XRCO both — makes him one of the most institutionally recognised Chinese-American figures in the entire history of the American adult-film industry.
