Nica Noelle
Career
Born Sydni Ellis, Noelle worked as a magazine columnist before entering the industry around 1995. After writing, directing and performing in scenes for the lesbian-focused studio Girlfriends Films, she left to co-found the rival label Sweetheart Video with Mile High Media, subsequently building further labels including Sweet Sinner, Girl Candy Films and a dedicated trans-content line. AVN gave her its Game Changer award in 2013 and XBIZ named her Trans Director of the Year in 2017. She has also written for HuffPost, Salon and Hustler.
Signature: The most direct performer-to-founder move on this list: she worked inside an established studio’s system and then left to build a competing one under her own creative control.
