Heather Hunter
Career
Hunter, born in the Bronx, debuted in adult film in 1988 and, per her Wikipedia article, "eventually became the first African-American woman to be a Vivid Entertainment contract girl" — a specific, studio-scoped first at one of the industry’s most prominent labels. She retired from performing in 1999 and built a genuinely unusual second career: dancing on Soul Train from 1990 to 1992, appearing in Tupac Shakur’s 1996 video for "How Do U Want It," recording for Island and Tommy Boy Records, hosting The Peep Show from 1998 to 2000, publishing the novel Insatiable: The Rise of a Porn Star with St. Martin’s Press in 2007, and opening the Artcore-NYC gallery in Brooklyn’s DUMBO neighbourhood in 2006. The AVN Hall of Fame inducted her in 2003; the XRCO Hall of Fame followed in 2022.
Signature: The only performer on this list whose second act — recording artist, author, gallery owner — is as well documented as her adult-film record.
