Yasmeena Ali
Career
Born in Kabul in December 1993, during the civil war, she moved with her family to England at the age of seven after the 2001 United States invasion of Afghanistan. English Wikipedia records that her parents raised her as Muslim and that she herself was not religious; at nineteen she began a relationship with a Jewish man, after which her family put her out of the house and cut contact. She took a social work degree, met the director David Cohen, whom she later married, and entered the adult industry through him. She converted formally to Judaism, her husband’s religion, and has since described herself as an atheist. The couple lived in Austria and moved to Slovakia in 2017. In 2019 her father and his cousin were arrested in the United Kingdom over a plot to kill her; the National Crime Agency stated that the men travelled to Slovakia in 2018 to find her and that a hitman offered to do it for $70,000. She was the subject of the Channel 4 documentary Afghanistan’s Top Porn Star in 2022 and now speaks publicly on women’s rights, and on what she describes as liberal silence about violations of them.
