Mr. Marcus
Career
Mr. Marcus worked from 1994 and built one of the largest credit counts of any performer of his generation, directing as well as performing. In July 2012 he tested positive for syphilis, received treatment, and then altered a copy of the test document by folding the page so that the positive result did not appear, and continued working. Two female co-stars were exposed. The Los Angeles City Attorney’s Office prosecuted him and he pleaded no contest in Los Angeles Superior Court to knowingly exposing another person to a communicable disease. On 4 June 2013 he was sentenced to 30 days in jail, 36 months of probation and 15 days of community labour. A separate civil judgment followed. His performing career effectively ended with the case.
Signature: A rare case of the American industry’s own health-testing system producing a criminal prosecution rather than an internal sanction.
