Ken Sprague
Career
Sprague began performing in hardcore gay films under the name Dakota in March 1970, producing several of his own releases, including Loadstar and California Supermen, through his own company, Dakota Productions. His own competitive bodybuilding record is amateur-level — the Mr. Cincinnati title in 1967 and a run of AAU championship appearances — but his lasting significance to the fitness world is as an owner, not a competitor: on 26 May 1972 he bought Gold’s Gym in Venice, California, for $15,000 cash plus roughly $74,000 in assumed debt, when the club had fewer than 100 members. Wikipedia’s own article on Gold’s Gym independently corroborates the purchase and the 1979 sale, naming the buyers as Ed Connors, Pete Grymkowski and Tim Kimber, though it dates the purchase to “late 1971” rather than the May 1972 date given on Sprague’s own page. He built it into what bodybuilding history now calls the sport’s Mecca, the gym that anchored the 1974 book and 1977 film Pumping Iron and drew Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dave Draper as regulars. He sold it in 1979 for approximately $5 million.
Signature: The only performer in this field whose fitness-world significance is as an owner rather than a competitor — he built the gym Pumping Iron was filmed in and sold it for roughly 330 times what he paid.
