Jamie Gillis
Career
A Columbia University graduate and former taxi driver, Gillis became one of the defining leading men of 1970s adult film and is widely credited as a pioneer of the gonzo style. He co-created the influential Dirty Debutante series with Ed Powers and directed his own On the Prowl line. He remained active as performer and director into the 2000s and appeared in the mainstream film Nighthawks in 1981. He died of melanoma in 2010.
Signature: Historians credit him with inventing gonzo — the unscripted, performer-led format that eventually became the industry’s default mode.
