Arabelle Raphael
Career
Raphael was born in France to a French and Tunisian mother and an Iranian Jewish father, and her family emigrated to the San Francisco Bay Area when she was five. She began working in the sex industry in 2010, including at the worker-owned strip club The Lusty Lady, and shot her first pornographic scene for Kink.com. She has said that early in her career mainstream producers either fetishised her ethnic appearance or tried to make her look whiter. She co-directed All My Mother’s Lovers for Grooby Productions in 2017, which won Most Tantalizing Trans Film at the Toronto International Porn Festival, has directed the experimental film La Nuisance, and contributed photographs to a 2017 SOMArts exhibition restaging hate mail she had received. After FOSTA-SESTA passed in 2018 she organised cybersecurity and resource-sharing meetings for Bay Area sex workers and co-founded Bay Pros Support with Maxine Holloway. Her OnlyFans income rose sixfold during the COVID-19 pandemic and the platform became her full-time occupation.
Signature: She is the one performer in this category who has publicly described what the industry actually does with a North African face — fetishise it or wash it out — which makes her account the closest thing here to first-hand evidence about the category itself.
