Madison Young
Career
Raised in southern Ohio and trained in theatre at the School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati, Columbia College Chicago and Antioch College, Young moved into erotic filmmaking in 2002 and has worked as performer, director and producer ever since. In San Francisco she founded and ran the Femina Potens Art Gallery for fourteen years, an arts non-profit rather than a production company, and built an annual Erotic Film School intensive around teaching people to make and distribute their own work. She has published three books — Daddy: A Memoir (2014), The Ultimate Guide to Sex Through Pregnancy and Motherhood (2016) and The DIY Porn Handbook: Documenting Our Own Sexual Revolution (2016) — has written for the peer-reviewed journal Porn Studies, and has lectured or sat on panels at Yale, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of Toronto and Emerson College. Her five Feminist Porn Awards run from 2008 to 2014, including the body’s Indie Porn Pioneer honour in 2009, and she directed and hosted the documentary series Submission Possible for Revry in 2020.
Signature: The clearest example in this programme of a career built by constructing the institutions rather than passing the auditions — a gallery, a school, a handbook and a publishing record, all of it outside the studio system.
