Casey Donovan
Career
John Calvin Culver performed as Casey Donovan from 1969, and Boys in the Sand (1971) made him the face of the genre’s "Golden Age": the first gay pornographic film to carry proper screen credits and the first reviewed by the mainstream trade paper Variety, a landmark of legitimacy for the category at large. He appeared on Broadway in a 1972 revival of Captain Brassbound’s Conversion, and later ran the short-lived Casa Donovan bed-and-breakfast in Key West (1978). He died in Inverness, Florida, on 10 August 1987, of an AIDS-related pulmonary infection. Neither the GayVN Awards nor the Grabby Awards existed during his career, which ended eleven and twelve years respectively before either was founded.
Signature: The single film most responsible for gay pornography being reviewed as cinema rather than dismissed outright, made by a performer no later award body ever had the chance to recognise.
