Al Parker
Career
Andrew Robert Okun performed as Al Parker from the late 1970s, credited with more than 40 films including Inches (1979) and the 3D feature Heavy Equipment (1977). He founded Surge Studios, one of the first gay production companies to mandate safe-sex practices on set once the AIDS epidemic reached the industry — a policy decision that shaped how the whole genre eventually approached production safety, well before any award body existed to recognise it. He died in San Francisco on 17 August 1992, aged 40, of AIDS-related complications. Neither the GayVN Awards (founded 1998) nor the Grabby Awards (first live ceremony 1999) existed during his lifetime, so no award record exists for him; that absence is a fact about the awards’ founding dates, not about his standing in the industry.
Signature: Set an industry safety standard during the AIDS crisis that outlasted him by decades, despite performing his entire career before any dedicated gay-industry award existed.
