Suzumi Suzuki
Career
Suzuki appeared in adult videos from around age 20 while an undergraduate at Keio University’s Faculty of Environment and Information Studies, later earning a master’s degree at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Interdisciplinary Information Studies in 2009 — her academic and public work is sociological in focus, though her degrees are not formally in a sociology department. She worked as a Nikkei newspaper reporter from 2009 to 2014, the same period in which her AV past became public via a 2014 Shukan Bunshun report. She left journalism for a full-time writing career, publishing a sociological study of AV actresses in 2013 and a memoir in 2014 that was adapted into a film. She has since become an acclaimed novelist, a finalist for the Akutagawa Prize in 2022 (twice) and again in 2026.
Signature: The only performer in the category who went on to write the academic literature about it — and then twice reached the shortlist for Japan’s most prestigious literary prize.
