Sibel Kekilli
Career
Born in Heilbronn to Turkish parents who emigrated to West Germany in 1977, Kekilli trained in administration at sixteen and worked in local government before moving to Essen. She appeared in pornographic films under the name Dilara for roughly six months across 2001 and 2002. A casting director spotted her in a Cologne shopping centre in 2002 and she won the lead in Fatih Akin’s Head-On against 350 other candidates; the film took the Golden Bear at Berlin and she took the Lola for Best Actress. The tabloid Bild disclosed her adult work immediately afterwards, her parents cut contact, and the German Press Council subsequently reprimanded the paper. She won a second Lola in 2010 for When We Leave, played Shae across twenty episodes of Game of Thrones between 2011 and 2014, and starred in the Kiel edition of Tatort for fourteen episodes.
Signature: She is the only performer on this page to have won her country’s national best-actress award twice, and the only one whose treatment by the press over an adult career produced a formal ruling against a newspaper.
