Charles Napier
Career
Napier served in the army from 1954 to 1958, graduated from Western Kentucky University in 1961 and worked as a coach and art teacher before acting. His film debut was the male lead in Russ Meyer’s Cherry, Harry & Raquel! (1970); he made four films with Meyer in all, including Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, Moonfire and Supervixens. A 1975 contract with Alfred Hitchcock launched a character-acting career built on corrupt police officers, soldiers and authority figures: Tucker McElroy in The Blues Brothers (1980), Marshall Murdock in Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985), Lt. Boyle in The Silence of the Lambs (1991), a judge in Philadelphia (1993), and both Austin Powers films. He also worked extensively in television and voice acting, including Duke Phillips in The Critic. He is described as one of very few Meyer actors to go on to a significant career.
Signature: His Meyer films were sexploitation features, not pornography, and they were the launchpad rather than the epitaph — a distinction almost every list under this search term collapses.
