Kostas Gousgounis
Career
Born Konstantinos Gousgounis in Larissa in 1931, he took small mainstream film roles from 1952 before becoming, through the 1970s and 1980s, the best-known face of Greece’s surrealist "sex comedy" genre — built on comedic improvisation rather than scripted performance. English Wikipedia describes screenings that caused traffic jams in Thessaloniki and a dedicated fan club, "Gousgounis 300," that met weekly at Athens’s Esperia Cinema. He continued taking mainstream roles into the 1990s and 2000s, including The Overcoat (1996) and Black Milk (2000), and in 2005 the 3rd Festival of Cult Greek Cinema gave him its Grand Prize and named him Person of the Festival, describing him as "the unsurpassed, legendary Gousgounis." He died in Eleusis in May 2022, aged 91.
