Hotaru Akane
Career
Born in Osaka, she debuted in February 2004 in the ensemble video Faithful Dog "Saseko" under the name Anna Akizuki, then changed agencies and adopted the name Hotaru Akane around the turn of 2005. Marketed initially in a gyaru style before a loli-style repositioning, she became known industry-wide for her female-ejaculation performances, earning the nickname "Shiofuki Queen" (潮吹き女王). She won Newcomer of the Year at the 2005 Weekly Playboy AV Academy Awards, Best Actress Award for Excellence at the 2006 SOD Awards, and first place in the Challenge Stage category plus the Lily Franky Honorary President Prize at the 2007 AV Open. She retired from AV work in 2008 after announcing the decision in a September 2008 Weekly Playboy interview, releasing her retirement work Final Gusher that October, and moved into tarento work, pole dancing, blogging and modelling for Koakuma Ageha. From 2007 she became a public HIV/AIDS-prevention advocate, speaking at a Shibuya Ward World AIDS Day event that December; in 2010 she became a Red Ribbon ambassador for Taiwan's AIDS-prevention foundation and took part in a Shanghai AIDS-prevention campaign that December; in June 2011 she held a press conference on condom education at Taiwan's Legislative Yuan; and in March 2012 a planned guest lecture at Central China Normal University in Wuhan was cancelled over security concerns, after which she gave a televised talk instead. In September 2012 an agency-run Sina Weibo account posted comments on the Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands dispute attributed to her, which her management said had been altered by a translator; she said she supported a peaceful resolution. She died on 15 August 2016, found collapsed at her home; her management attributed the death to suffocation from an acute asthma attack, with suicide and foul play ruled out. She was 32. An NHK documentary broadcast that December, whose title translates as "Asia's Tears — An AV Actress's Death, and the Fight Against Distorted Views of Sex," covered her death and advocacy work.
Signature: The performer on this page with the most extensive documented reach into the Chinese-speaking world during her lifetime — a Legislative Yuan press conference in Taiwan, an AIDS-prevention campaign in Shanghai, an attempted university lecture in Wuhan — built on a genuine three-body competitive award record rather than reputation alone.
